Electric Cycles in Varanasi
The classic Varanasi run is Cantonment station to the BHU campus at Lanka, 9 to 10 km, and an e-cycle does it without the soaked shirt. In the ghat lanes behind Dashashwamedh only people and cycles fit, and riders from far-out Lahartara get the most from the assist.

- Cantonment to BHU and back
X1
₹27,999Cantonment to the BHU gate at Lanka, the longest everyday run, is about 10 km on level ground. On the X1, a claimed 45 km range gives you two round trips and a little extra.
- Old-city homes and narrow galis
Doodle Pro
₹55,999Families by the ghats often live in tall, thin houses, steep stairs, nowhere to park. Folded, the Doodle Pro goes indoors, and 20-inch fat tyres roll over broken lanes.
- School and coaching runs
ST-X
₹32,999Schools and coaching centres crowd Lanka, Bhelupur and Sigra, so trips tend to be 3 to 6 km. Shorter riders from 4'9" to 5'7" fit the ST-X, and a 25 km/h assist limit is right for busy roads.

Between the ghats, the galis and the BHU gate
Picture Banaras in three bands. Start at the water. Behind Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika and Panchganga the old city is a maze, and the only things that fit are people, cycles and the occasional brave scooter. Behind them runs the commercial spine: Godowlia, Luxa, Sigra, Maldahiya. Newer colonies come after. South you'll find Mahmoorganj, Bhelupur, Shivala and Lanka, and north, Pandeypur and Cantonment. Lahartara sits furthest out, so the trip in from there is where assist pays for itself.
Everyone's benchmark is Cantonment station to the Banaras Hindu University campus at Lanka, roughly 9 to 10 km straight across town. BHU dates from 1916 and draws students, doctors and staff from all sides, and its Sir Sunderlal Hospital brings a constant stream of visitors. With assist, you do it without the soaked shirt that puts people off plain cycles here.
Change is coming. The Smart City project planned a full launch on 1 August 2026 for a bike-share with over 300 cycles and e-bikes and 30-plus docks, among them Sigra, Kachahari, Cantonment and BHU. And a Kashi ropeway of 3.75 km and five stations will connect Cantonment station with Godowlia. In September 2026 it was about 95 per cent built, with opening aimed at late November. Ride to the terminal, take the cabin, and bypass the worst road stretch.
May is fierce, with highs averaging 40.4 °C. The monsoon makes it warm and sticky and delivers most of the roughly 986 mm, starting in July. Winter mornings by the river are cold and foggy. And festivals count as weather too. Dev Deepawali and the Sawan months slow the roads to the ghats to a crawl, and two narrow wheels suddenly look clever.

Electric cycles in Varanasi: FAQs
In plenty of them, if you go at walking speed. Near the big temples and ghats some stretches are shut to vehicles or packed with pilgrims, and then you wheel the bike. On festival days, do what the police barricades say.
For a one-off hop between docks, say Sigra, Kachahari or BHU, the Smart City bike-share is handy. Ride daily, though, and your own cycle saves the per-ride fee, leaves from your door, and means no scramble for a free bike at 9 am.
Probably. It's meant to cover Cantonment station to Godowlia in around 15 minutes. Pedal to the Cantonment terminal, ride the cabin over the old city, and you avoid the slowest road of all.
Not for e-cycles. The UP policy's purchase subsidy covers e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, cars, goods carriers and buses, and a pedal-assist cycle isn't any of those.
No. Under CMVR rule 2(u), a pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor of up to 250 W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h is not a motor vehicle, so you need no licence, registration or insurance.
The store finder on this page shows the closest EMotorad dealer. Heat and dusty galis are hard on chains, so book a check before May and one after the monsoon ends in October.
