Electric Cycles in Pune

Offices moved out to Hinjewadi and Kharadi, and that's where an e-cycle earns its place in Pune: Aundh to Hinjewadi Phase 1 is roughly 10 km, and with assist you keep pace with cars crawling at 18 km/h. Baner Road and Sinhagad Road tilt uphill, so gears help too.

Riding an e-cycle in Pune

The old peths were built for cycles. Shaniwar Wada, Deccan Gymkhana, Sadashiv Peth: everything's a few minutes apart. What broke the habit was the job move. Offices shifted out to Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Magarpatta and Viman Nagar, and nobody wants to pedal 15 km each way on a plain cycle before a meeting. With assist, you can.

Now the hills. Baner Road starts to climb past Pashan. Beyond Katraj the road keeps going up into the ghat. Sinhagad Road tilts the whole way out of town. Even Senapati Bapat Road and the Law College Road lanes roll over a spur of Vetal Tekdi. You won't be gasping if you've got gears and a bit of assist; you'll just keep turning the pedals.

Then the jams. TomTom's 2025 index had Pune's rush-hour speed at about 18 km/h. From Aundh to Hinjewadi Phase 1, expect roughly 10 km. Kalyani Nagar to the EON IT Park in Kharadi is about 6. Door to door, an e-cycle keeps pace with a car on both, minus the parking circus. For longer hauls, the Purple and Aqua metro lines work as park-and-ride from Shivajinagar, Vanaz and Ramwadi.

April is the scorcher, close to 38 °C on average, so start early. Rain comes June to September and runs around 840 mm a year. It's steady, not savage. Still, low spots on Sinhagad Road and the stretches beside the Mula-Mutha can fill when the ghats get a heavy spell. Wipe the bike down after wet rides.

First week on an e-cycle? Don't start with Baner. Try Kothrud to Karve Road, flat and short, so the assist levels make sense. Save the climb for when your legs have caught up, and leave ahead of the Hinjewadi rush.

Electric cycles in Pune: FAQs

  • Inside the city, yes. Both rise slowly rather than steeply. Drop a gear, use middle assist, done. The ghat beyond Katraj is a longer pull, so take a geared model and a full battery.

  • Call it 10 km to Phase 1 via Wakad, about 35 minutes if you're not racing. Phase 3 is another 5 km or so. Any of our adult models has the range.

  • No. Maharashtra's 2025 policy pays out on EVs that get registered in the state, two-wheelers upwards. An e-cycle never goes to the RTO, so there's nothing to claim.

  • Hardly. About 840 mm a year, spread through the monsoon, so wet rides are normal here. Just skip the flooded bits near the river and towel the bike off before you charge it indoors.

  • Neither. Keep the motor at 250 W or less and the assist cutting out at 25 km/h, and CMVR rule 2(u) treats it as a bicycle. No plate, no licence, no insurance.

  • Plenty of people do. Pedal to Shivajinagar, Vanaz or Ramwadi, lock up, and let the Purple or Aqua Line handle the jammed middle bit.
