A long, flat city strung along the Ganga
Drop the idea of a round city with a middle. Danapur cantonment holds one end, Patna City's old trading lanes the other, and Bailey Road, Ashok Rajpath and Gandhi Maidan sit in between. Corner to corner is over 20 km, which no one rides each day. Real trips are shorter hops. Frazer Road from Kankarbagh. Patna Junction from Rajendra Nagar. The Secretariat from Boring Road. You get to know the city by corridors.
There aren't any hills. The alluvial plain is flat enough to behave like a saucer, which is the problem. When rain arrives in late June, the water can't run off quickly. After one heavy spell, Kankarbagh and bits of Rajendra Nagar stand in water, and by mid-July you've learned which lanes to skip. About 1,078 mm falls per year, mostly July to September.
May hurts. Daily highs average 37.5 °C, with a hot wind in the afternoon. People set off before nine and come back after six. With assist, you arrive at work without the soaked shirt a plain bicycle gives. December and January mornings are foggy, so carry a front light.
The metro's new. Its first stretch opened in October 2025, connecting Patliputra ISBT, Zero Mile and Bhoothnath. If you live near the eastern bypass, cycling to a station and finishing the trip by train is realistic now. For Hajipur, you'd cross the 5.6 km Mahatma Gandhi Setu, full of trucks. An e-cycle can do it. Calm it isn't.

Electric cycles in Patna: FAQs
Shallow water, fine. Deep, no. Patna's saucer-shaped ground keeps some colonies wet for hours. Avoid water that reaches the hubs, take Kankarbagh's main road instead of inner lanes on heavy days, and dry the bike before charging.
The bridge is 5.6 km, carries steady truck traffic and has no cycle lane. Confident riders do it on the far left. If Hajipur is your daily destination, test it on a Sunday morning first.
No. Bihar's EV policy pays purchase incentives only to electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers that meet FAME standards. An e-cycle up to 250 W and 25 km/h isn't a registered vehicle, so Bihar's EV incentives, which go to registered EVs, don't apply to it.
Patna's May highs average around 37.5 °C. Ride early, take water, park in shade, and give the battery half an hour to cool before charging. A gamcha or cap helps more than you'd think.
No. Under CMVR rule 2(u), a pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor up to 250 W and assisted top speed of 25 km/h isn't a motor vehicle anywhere in India. No licence, registration or insurance.
Yes, split the trip. The first stretch connects Patliputra ISBT, Zero Mile and Bhoothnath, so riders on the eastern side can cycle to a station, park and board.
The store finder on this page lists EMotorad dealers. Dust and waterlogged lanes are hard on chains and brakes, so get a check before May and again once the monsoon ends in September.
