Electric Cycles in Chandigarh
Sector-to-sector trips are what an e-cycle is made for here, with cycle lanes behind the trees on the big avenues like Madhya Marg and Jan Marg. The UT's EV policy even names e-bicycles, and the only real effort is the slow drag up toward Sukhna Lake and the Capitol Complex.

- Panjab University students
ST-X
₹32,999Around Sector 14 and the hostels nearby, students shuttle between lecture halls, canteens and libraries all day. The ST-X is sized for 4'9" to 5'7" riders, and the slow rise towards the lake won't bother them.
- Tricity commute to Mohali or Zirakpur
Viper
₹66,999Coming in from Panchkula or Zirakpur to the IT Park or Industrial Area can mean 15 km one way. A claimed 85 km on the Viper leaves you several of those days before the charger comes out.

Riding an e-cycle in Chandigarh
Le Corbusier's team planned every sector as a small self-contained block, then graded the roads by speed. Fast arterials such as Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg, Jan Marg, Purv Marg and Himalaya Marg carry through traffic, while a lot of them have their own cycle lane behind the trees. Ask for directions and you'll get a sector number, nothing more. Everyone can picture the route.
Flat? Nearly. Sector 1 holds the Capitol Complex and Sukhna Lake, snug against the Shivalik foothills, and the whole city drains gently southward towards Mohali. Pedal up Jan Marg for the lake or the Secretariat and your legs will register a slow, steady drag. Come home and you coast. Switch assist on and the difference disappears.
Where do people actually go? Sector 17 and 22 for shopping and offices. PGIMER in Sector 12. Panjab University in Sector 14. The Industrial Area, both phases, and the IT Park out towards Kishangarh. Riders arrive from all over the tricity. Within the city limits, 3 to 8 km covers nearly everything; live in Mohali, Panchkula or Zirakpur, and a single leg can stretch to 15 km.
The city also backs the habit. Its public bike-share grew to 3,750 cycles at 465 docking stations once the third phase went live, and the Chandigarh EV Policy 2022 carries an incentive line for e-bicycles. For someone new to riding, that's a rare head start.
Weather is milder than the rest of north India's plains, but it still swings. May hits 38.6 °C on average, about 1,040 mm of monsoon falls from late June through September, and winter mornings in December and January can turn to fog. In summer start early. In fog, put proper lights on. After heavy rain, towel the bike down before it goes on charge.

Electric cycles in Chandigarh: FAQs
Not any more. Chandigarh's EV Policy 2022 used to pay 25% of an e-cycle's price (up to ₹4,000), but the administration stopped all cash subsidies for new buyers through an amendment notified on 25 September 2026.
You can. A pedal-assist bike that stops assisting at 25 km/h behaves like an ordinary cycle there. Ride at a sensible pace and let pedestrians go first where a track crosses a sector entrance.
No. It climbs slowly from the southern sectors to Sector 1, nothing you'd call a hill. With assist you'll barely feel it, and the trip home is quick.
Plan on roughly 12 km and 40 minutes, easy pace, mixing cycle tracks with sector roads. Any adult model manages a daily return.
No. If the motor is 250 W or less and the assist cuts off at 25 km/h on a pedal-assist e-cycle, it falls outside the motor vehicle definition in CMVR rule 2(u). Licence, registration and insurance don't apply.
Fit a bright headlight and a blinking tail light, wear something reflective, and ease off on Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg until visibility improves. Expect slightly shorter range when mornings are very cold.
