Haridwar's commute runs 5 to 12 km between Jwalapur, Har Ki Pauri, BHEL Ranipur and SIDCUL, all flat, and an e-cycle is what gets through when the Kanwar Yatra closes roads to vehicles. Go at dawn ahead of the aarti crowds, and check the diversions first.

Haridwar: ghats, BHEL and the SIDCUL commute

Better to think of it as a handful of small towns. Kankhal down south. Jwalapur and Bhagwanpur to the west. Ranipur in the east, home to thousands at BHEL's township. Jwalapur to Har Ki Pauri is around 6 km, BHEL to SIDCUL about 5, and a typical commute lands between five and twelve.

Pilgrims call the shots. When the Kanwar Yatra comes round, roads clog or close to vehicles, and some stretches can only be crossed on foot or by cycle. Work out the diversions beforehand. Set off at dawn, before the aarti crowds arrive.

At roughly 314 m it's flat, the Shivalik hills rising north. Expect about 1,050 mm of rain a year and May around 36 °C. Along the Ganga canal banks and out through Bhimgoda there's decent riding when things are quiet. In the monsoon, though, floods leave silt on lanes at the low end.

Electric cycles in Haridwar: FAQs

  • Roads are packed, and stretches close to vehicles for days. Start early, follow diversion signs, and expect to walk the cycle through thick crowds.

  • BHEL to SIDCUL is roughly 5 km, with the ghats a few more. Flat, and well inside any model's range.

  • About 1,050 mm falls yearly, mainly June to September. Wet roads and silt, then. Mudguards help; wipe the drivetrain after wet rides and keep the battery dry.

  • Not right now. The purchase-subsidy policy in Uttarakhand has run out, the next one hasn't been notified, and e-cycles were never part of it.

  • No. CMVR rule 2(u) doesn't treat a pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor up to 250 W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h as a motor vehicle. No licence, registration or insurance.
