Headwinds and stop-start traffic on Ferozepur Road wear a rider down more than any gradient, and that's where an e-cycle helps. It also slips through the Clock Tower and Chaura Bazaar lanes without ever needing a parking hunt.

Riding in India's cycle capital
Hills don't exist here. Once the Sutlej ran beside the old city; today it's about 13 km to the north and the Budha Nala is all that's left nearby. So you ride on level ground, and what shortens your range is distance, wind and stop-start. Open-field headwinds can sap you more than any gradient. Keep a bit of assist back for the return leg.
Traffic is the enemy. Cars squeeze down Ferozepur Road towards the PAU campus, Model Town and Sarabha Nagar. Trucks bound for NH 44 come in off GT Road. Then there's the old heart, around the Clock Tower, near Chaura Bazaar: handcarts, rickshaws, no gaps. An e-cycle keeps up with all of it, and finding a parking spot is never a problem.
Proper cycle infrastructure is thin. Near Sarabha Nagar the Sidhwan Canal has a track, and Rakh Bagh has another, though both were designed for leisure. Malhar Road got a Smart City track meant to be a flagship. When the local press looked in June 2026, parked cars had mostly taken it over. So build your daily route from ordinary roads and count tracks as a bonus.
Factory shifts begin early across Focal Point, Giaspura and Dhandari, and lots of workers cycle already. Assist lets them do 10 to 15 km each way and still have energy left. The mean high in May is 39 °C. Of about 790 mm of yearly rain, most arrives July to September. In December, fog sometimes shrinks visibility to a few metres, and that's when your lights matter.

Electric cycles in Ludhiana: FAQs
Yes. Punjab's EV Policy, extended to 20 February 2027, gives the first 20,000 e-cycle buyers 25% of the price, up to ₹4,000. Cargo e-cycles get 33%, up to ₹10,000.
Partly. It exists, but recent reports describe long sections blocked by parked vehicles. Most everyday riders choose Ferozepur Road and the inner lanes of Sarabha Nagar, keeping the Sidhwan Canal track for evening rides.
Mount a bright front light and a red rear one, wear reflective clothing, and avoid NH 44 at dawn when trucks speed along with poor visibility. Fog peaks from late December into January. Ride in the middle of the day instead.
Roughly 10 to 12 km, depending on where you cross the railway line and GT Road. Allow 35 to 45 minutes in normal traffic. There are no hills on the way.
No. Under CMVR rule 2(u), a pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor up to 250 W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h isn't a motor vehicle. No licence, registration or insurance is needed.
Use the store finder on this page to find the EMotorad dealer nearest you. Dust from the fields and sticky monsoon grime both hit chains and brake pads, so book a check before the summer and one after the September rains.
