Riding an e-cycle in Hubballi-Dharwad
Think of the old Pune-Bengaluru road as the spine. It starts at Hubballi's central bus terminus, passes Unkal, Navanagar and Rayapur, and finishes in Dharwad, with Chigari BRTS buses sharing the middle for about 22.25 km. Most people live at one end or the other. A good number of students, teachers and office workers do the whole stretch every day, and that decides which bike suits them.
Hubballi's the easy half. Trading streets in Old Hubli and Durgadbail, the layouts of Keshwapur, Deshpande Nagar and Vidyanagar, Gokul Road running to the airport and its industrial units: all fairly level. Markets, railway offices and colleges such as KIMS and BVB sit within 3 to 8 km. Heading north, Unkal Lake makes a pleasant detour.
Dharwad is a different feel. Go north-west beyond Navanagar and Rayapur and the road begins to climb, and near Saptapur, Malmaddi and the Karnataka University campus there are honest ups and downs. Pedalling from Jubilee Circle towards the university on a plain bicycle, you'll feel every metre. On assist it's a single gear change and a steady spin. The plateau elevation keeps most months comfortable anyway.
Between the two towns, business parks are growing. The Software Technology Park on Dharwad Road and the Aryabhata Tech Park at Navanagar mean plenty of riders cover just 10 to 12 km each way instead of the full 22. And a semi ring road on NH 48 now draws some long-haul trucks off the city streets.
April is the hot one at around 40 °C. After that, the monsoon brings roughly 870 mm between June and September, a little more on the Dharwad side. Carry a rain jacket for July and August, dry the bike before charging, and save the long rides for November to February, when it's cool and clear.

Electric cycles in Hubli-Dharwad: FAQs
It is. The BRTS road is about 22 km each way, so roughly 44 km round trip, climbing gently into Dharwad. A Viper or Ranger does it on a single charge. Plug in each night.
Roughly 8 to 10 km along the Pune to Bengaluru road, around 30 to 35 minutes at a relaxed pace. Any adult model handles that.
No. The rise from Hubballi is long and gradual, and the steeper stretches near the university are short. Drop a gear, add assist, and you'll hardly notice.
No. Karnataka's Clean Mobility Policy 2025-30 steers its incentives to manufacturers and charging infrastructure, and it has no purchase subsidy for e-cycles.
No. A pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor up to 250 W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h isn't a motor vehicle under CMVR rule 2(u), so there's no licence, registration or insurance.
Dharwad catches slightly more rain than Hubballi, mostly in July and August. Ordinary showers are fine. Stay out of water deep enough to reach the motor and let the bike and charging port dry before plugging in.
