The old footpath up to Tirumala begins at Alipiri: 3,550 steps, about 11 km, and the whole town bends around the pilgrims who climb it. Two asphalt ghat roads, laid in 1944 and 1974, climb hard. Stay in town and you still meet a taste of that gradient on the slopes near Alipiri.
The main commercial streets are Gandhi Road, Prakasam Road, VV Mahal Road and the AIR Bypass. The Swarnamukhi winds past on the Renigunta, Tiruchanur and Chandragiri side, and NH 71, NH 140 and NH 716 head off in different directions. At SV University, IIT Tirupati and IISER, mornings and evenings bring a rush of student riders.
