The seafront, the ECR and a long north-east monsoon
Flat right down to the sea. The beach road along the Promenade and the grid of streets behind it are some of the nicest riding anywhere in India. Mid-morning heat is manageable and the breeze helps. Crossing town takes minutes on an e-cycle, and you reach the ECR without having broken a sweat.
Auroville lies about 8 km north-west. ECR itself runs all the way to Chennai through Mahabalipuram, which tempts weekend riders to push further. Bring a big battery for that, and watch the traffic: fast buses and tourist cars.
June can touch 37.1 °C in the afternoon, and the year adds up to about 1,398 mm of rain. The south-west monsoon covers June to September, but the north-east one, mid-October through December, is the real wet season. Salt in the air chews chains, so rinse and re-oil often.
