Where the Ghats meet the Arabian Sea: Nagercoil
The Nagaraja Temple, dedicated to the Nagas, gave the town its name. Streets fan out toward Vadasery, known for GI-tagged temple jewellery, and Kottar, the older name for Nagercoil that the railway station still carries. The ground rolls, so gentle rises appear even in the centre.
The Ghats are close. Clove and pepper grow on slopes outside town, and Pechiparai Reservoir makes a day trip into that country. Rain comes mostly with the north-east monsoon, October to December, with a few showers from June to August. Kanyakumari, about 15 km away, has the nearest weather station and averages 781 mm a year, and April, its hottest month, reaches only 33.1 °C.
The student crowd here is large: Scott Christian College (founded 1809), South Travancore Hindu College, Holy Cross, the Women's Christian College, plus the Kanyakumari Government Medical College. Daily rides run 3 to 9 km. And once in a while there's an errand out to the Thovalai flower market.
