The dam is the reason for everything green here. Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV and M. Visvesvaraya built KRS, and it opened in 1932. Today the fields it feeds supply the sugar mills and jaggery units, and at shift change workers pour in from the surrounding villages.
NH 275, marked SH 88 in places, runs through on the Bengaluru to Mysuru line. Inside town, with its 35 wards, most trips are 3 to 8 km: home to market, or out to the mill gates. Hardly any gradient. A small battery stretches a long way.
