Rain, laterite rises and the Calicut bypass

Monsoon after monsoon. About 3,000 mm in a year, with the south-west rains first and the north-east ones after, so wet tarmac is simply normal for months. Your e-cycle is sealed and fine with it. What it needs is a wipe-down and a charge indoors once you're back.

Flat? Not quite. Mavoor Road, Palayam, West Hill and Thenjipalam are linked by short laterite rises that sting the legs. The Calicut mini bypass and NH 66 hum with heavy coastal traffic. Then there's Mittai Theruvu and Valiyangadi, narrow bazaar lanes where a small cycle slips past stuck cars.

Office commuters head to UL Cyberpark or Hilite Business Park, usually 6 to 15 km from their homes. April is the warmest month at 34.4 degrees, which is gentle by Indian standards. Sticky air is what wears you down.

Electric cycles in Kozhikode: FAQs

  • It's the real test here, with roughly 3,000 mm a year across two monsoons, June to September and mid-October to November. The sealed pack tolerates wet roads. Skip deep puddles, dry the drivetrain, and plug in indoors.

  • No. It's short. Drop to a low gear on a geared model, keep the assist on, and you'll roll up. If you carry a heavy load, choose a larger battery.

  • Around 6 to 8 km each way depending on route, so 15 km or so there and back. An X1 claims up to 45 km, leaving a good margin.

  • No subsidy here. Kerala's purchase subsidy under its EV policy was for electric three-wheelers alone. E-cycles were never covered. Budget for the full sticker price.

  • Neither. CMVR rule 2(u) excludes a pedal-assist e-cycle whose motor is 250 W or less and whose assist stops at 25 km/h from being a motor vehicle.
