Electric Cycles in Cuttack

For the crowded old core around Chandni Chowk, Buxi Bazar and Malgodown, an electric cycle slips through where a car stops dead. Bidanasi to town is a short, flat hop, and a long-range e-cycle can even manage the 25 to 30 km to Bhubaneswar.

Riding Cuttack: Chandni Chowk, Barabati and the river bridges

The old trading core is where a cycle earns its keep. Chandni Chowk's food stalls, Buxi Bazar, Chhatra Bazaar and the Malgodown wholesale market: dense, slow crowds that stop a car dead and let a bicycle through. The only genuine ramps are the bridges over the Kathajodi and the Mahanadi, and those are short and busy.

Distances stay small. People live in Bidanasi, Jobra, Dolamundai or off Stadium Road and work or study elsewhere in town. Plenty also commute to Bhubaneswar, 25 to 30 km each way on the highway. That's a stretch for a basic commuter bike. For a long-range model it's fine.

Rain falls July to October, about 1,598 mm a year, and the cyclones of 1971 and 1999 are still talked about. May touches 37.4 degrees. Sensible habits: ride early, keep the bike indoors during a flood warning, and never leave the battery charging in a damp ground-floor room.

A word on Chandni Chowk in the evening. It's the best place in the city to be on a bicycle and the worst place to be in a hurry. In the thickest crowd, step off and walk. Nobody minds.

Electric cycles in Cuttack: FAQs

  • About 25 to 30 km on the highway. A round trip uses most of a Ranger's or Viper's claimed range, and smaller batteries need a charge at the other end.

  • They can. The city lies between two rivers and low streets flood in the July to October rains. Avoid deep water, and let the cycle dry completely before you charge.

  • Yes, that's where a bicycle's size pays off. Still, get off in the densest crowd and go at walking pace.

  • Not for e-cycles. The Odisha scheme is for registered electric two-wheelers that clear FAME-II standards, including a 40 km/h top speed, and for bigger EVs. At 25 km/h an e-cycle falls short.

  • No. CMVR rule 2(u) excludes a pedal-assist e-cycle up to 250 W with assisted speed up to 25 km/h from the motor vehicle definition, so no licence, registration or insurance is needed.
