Electric Cycles in Bhopal
Shyamla, Idgah and Arera hills throw up short, sharp climbs, and that's where an e-cycle turns a daily 5 to 8 km ride to MP Nagar from a breathless one into a comfortable one. Bhopal switched on India's first fully automated public bike-share back in 2017, so nobody here needs convincing to cycle.

Riding an e-cycle in Bhopal
Try Shyamla Hills first, and you'll understand the town. Then the road over Idgah Hills to the old city. Then Arera Colony and Char Imli. Short climbs, every one of them, but sharp enough to have a plain-cycle rider stopping for breath. Drop into a low gear, let assist do its bit, stay in the saddle, and enjoy the roll down to the water. People who ride here daily know the nasty gradients by name and route around them. Choosing the road matters more than anything else.
Where do people actually go? South from the walled city (Chowk Bazaar, Peer Gate) towards MP Nagar, Arera Colony, Shahpura and the Hoshangabad Road colonies. A home-to-MP-Nagar ride, offices and coaching centres included, usually lands at 5 to 8 km. From Kolar Road it's about 9. Over in the east, shift workers pedal to the BHEL township and the Govindpura industrial area.
About that bike-share. It ran with Bhopal Municipal Corporation, with hundreds of GPS-fitted cycles docked around New Market, MP Nagar and Hoshangabad Road, and red-marked lanes on the main corridor. There's also a metro now, near AIIMS and Subhash Nagar, so you can pedal to a station and ride on. Nice when a shower's coming or you simply can't be bothered with the full distance.
Summer peaks near 41 °C in May, so leave early or late, and keep the battery out of the sun. Rain is about 1,100 mm over a year, falling mostly July to September. The roads beside the Lower Lake and bits of the old city hold water. After the rains, October to February, the lake roads are lovely at dusk. VIP Road along the Upper Lake is the one to pick.

Electric cycles in Bhopal: FAQs
Yes. From the Upper Lake side it's short but steep. Pick a low gear, set mid or high assist, and stay seated. A geared bike makes life much easier.
It started in June 2017 as India's first fully automated scheme, with docks at New Market, MP Nagar and Hoshangabad Road. By late 2025 it was down to about 500 cycles at 55 stations, and the operator's contract was due to end that November, so don't build a commute around it. With your own e-cycle, no dock-hunting.
About 9 km, with a couple of gentle rises, so roughly half an hour if you're not rushing. Every adult EMotorad model's claimed range covers it. You'll stop at the same signals as cars, so don't expect to beat a scooter by much.
None. The notified Madhya Pradesh EV Policy 2025 has no purchase subsidy for any vehicle type, e-cycles included.
No. A pedal-assist e-cycle with a motor up to 250 W and assisted speed up to 25 km/h isn't a motor vehicle under CMVR rule 2(u), so it needs no licence, registration or insurance.
It's among the best in the city: flat, open, with lake views. Go early or around sunset, and keep an eye out for fast cars at the Kohefiza end. Take a light if you'll still be out after dark.
