E-Cycle - What is Electric Cycle, Working, Pros, Cons & All You Need to Know [2026 Guide]

What is an Electric Cycle?

Technology has improved our lives in various ways, be it renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy or breakthroughs in medical science; we are living in a futuristic age now. There are unlimited options to keep ourselves fit and active, electric cycles being one of them.

Before searching for the best electric cycles, check out these facts for a smart deal.

An electric cycle is quite similar to a standard cycle that has two paddles, a seat, and two wheels. The difference is that in addition to these, an electric cycle has a motor, a throttle, and a battery that make it more powerful than the normal cycle.

How Does An Ecycle Work?

People in metros and big cities prefer electric cycles than driving cars to avoid traffic jams. People in rural areas also prefer using electric cycles for commuting as these are fast and easy to operate.

The working of an ecycle is quite simple. It has a pedal assist; the motor kicks into gear when you push the pedal, and the electric bicycle is pushed forward. Electric cycles can travel at a speed of 25 km per hour.

What Are The Essential Parts Of An Electric Cycle?

While electric cycles come with myriad features like sleek fenders, integrated lights, and rechargeable batteries that enhance the aesthetics, certain other features are essential. Let us take a look at them.

  • Motor - Ecycles are equipped with two types of motors- a hub motor and a mid-drive motor. The hub motor is fixed on the front of the rear wheel. This affects the centre of gravity, and your ecycle may wobble a bit. Although it is cheap, the ride is not smooth. A mid-drive motor is better in this respect as it is mounted in the centre and connected to the pedal sprocket.

  • Battery - This is the main power source of an electric cycle, without which it is just like any other ordinary cycle. Though you can choose any battery for your cycle, it is better to opt for a lightweight one that is also powerful. Most of the old models had lead batteries; the new models come with more powerful Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are better as they make the ecycle go for up to 40 km on a single charge. You can opt for a Nickel-Cadmium battery if you want a cheaper option.

  • Drivetrain and frame - The pedals, chainrings, cranks, and cogs together form the drivetrain of the ecycle. These are driven by the motor so that you can easily pedal and shift gears. The frame of electric bicycle is generally made of lightweight aluminium alloy. This increases the efficiency of the ecycle. The electric cycle’s spokes should ideally be made of chrome, brass, or steel as it has more torque. If the spokes are not strong enough, they might bend.

  • Brakes - As electric cycles are more powerful, they need strong brakes too. Two types of brakes are used in ecycles, hydraulic disc brakes and rim brakes. Although rim brakes need little maintenance, hydraulic disc brakes are better in the long run.

What Are The Benefits of Using Electric Bicycle?

  • Assisted Biking – Electric cycle have a pedal assist powered by a battery. This makes your ride easier and reduces stress on your knees and thighs. Some of these ecycles have boosting technology that helps you in challenging terrains.

  • Improves Fitness Level – Although motors power electric cycle, you must still pedal. This motivates you to do some exercise and improve your fitness level. People of all age groups can easily ride these electric cycles.

  • Cost-effective – You can considerably reduce your expenses by using ecycle instead of driving a car or any other vehicle. The petrol and diesel prices are high in most countries and adversely impact your budget.

  • Futuristic mode of Transportation – Gone are the days when the roads were packed with bulky vehicles giving out jets of smoke. Technological advancement has given us sleek and efficient means of transport that are easy to use and low cost. They also play an important part in conserving the environment by reducing pollution.

  • Nature Friendly – Ecycle allow us to contribute towards saving our mother earth by addressing issues such as climate change and global warming. As they emit no smoke and harmful pollutants in the air, the air quality improves considerably.

  • Wide variety of Designs – Ecycles are the latest rage among youngsters, and the companies are vying with each other to boost sales. They provide a plethora of design options to woo customers. Some features can be customised as well.

  • Hassle-free – Electric cycles are easily available in the market and online as well. You can select the one you like and don’t need to worry about number plates and insurance policies.

Conclusion

Now that you know all the facts, you are ready to ride your electric cycle. But before you go, make sure that the ecycle you buy is durable, efficient, and safe. Some of the things to consider are the quality of the brakes and the battery power so that you get your money’s worth. Enjoy the power of your ecycle and remain fit and healthy too.
