E-Bike Maintenance: How to Make Your Battery, Brakes and Drivetrain Last Years Longer

Your e-bike will tell you when something is wrong. The problem is that most riders only learn to read the signals after an expensive repair.

This guide covers what actually matters: how to keep the battery healthy for years rather than months, what to check before every ride, realistic service intervals, how to adapt your routine to your climate, and the specific mistakes that void a manufacturer's warranty.

Whether you ride a step-through commuter through city traffic or a hardtail across weekend trails, the fundamentals are the same. Where they differ by model, we've said so.

Understanding what you actually own

An e-bike is a bicycle with four extra systems layered on top. Maintenance means looking after both halves.

The mechanical half is a conventional bicycle (chain, brakes, tyres, bearings) but working considerably harder. Motor assistance puts far more load through the drivetrain than legs alone, and the bike itself is heavier. A T-Rex Pro weighs around 21 kg net before you add a rider and cargo. That extra mass is felt by every brake pad, spoke and bearing on the bike.

The electrical half has four components:

  • Battery. The most valuable single part of the bike, and the one most affected by how you treat it.

  • Motor. On most of our range, a 250W rear hub motor delivering assistance proportional to your pedalling.

  • Controller. Manages power flow between battery and motor.

  • Sensors and display. Pedal assist sensors, brake cut-offs, lights and readout.

The electrical half is largely sealed and needs very little intervention. The mechanical half needs regular attention. Most owners get this backwards. They worry about the motor and neglect the chain.

Battery care: the part that actually matters

A quality lithium-ion e-bike battery is designed for roughly 800–1,000 full charge cycles before dropping to about 80% of its original capacity. Whether you reach that number or fall well short of it comes down almost entirely to charging and storage habits.

A practical advantage of a removable battery. Every bike in our range, from the T-Rex Pro to the EMX+, uses a removable pack. This is not just a charging convenience. It means you can bring the battery indoors regardless of where the bike is stored, which is the single most effective thing you can do for its lifespan. A bike locked in an unheated garage or a shared bike store is subject to whatever the weather does. The battery on a shelf in your hallway is not.

Adapting to your climate

Generic maintenance advice tends to assume mild, dry conditions. Europe offers considerably more variety than that. Here is what actually changes depending on where and when you ride.

Heat

Heat damages lithium batteries permanently, and the damage accumulates. A battery repeatedly exposed to 35°C and above loses capacity substantially faster than one kept near 20°C, and that capacity never returns.

This matters more than most riders realise in southern Europe, where an unventilated garage in Spain, Italy or southern France can pass 45°C in July and August. The rules for hot weather:

  • Bring the battery indoors for storage during summer months

  • Let the pack cool for 45 minutes after a ride before charging it

  • Park in shade where you can. Half an hour in direct sun heats a pack noticeably

  • Never leave a battery in a parked car. Boot temperatures routinely exceed 60°C

Cold

Cold does not damage the battery permanently, but it does reduce available range temporarily, sometimes by 20–30% below freezing. The pack is not faulty. The chemistry is simply slower.

Store the battery indoors overnight in winter and fit it just before riding. Never charge a battery that has come in from sub-zero conditions until it has warmed to room temperature. Expect and plan for reduced range rather than being caught out by it.

Rain and wet roads

Our bikes are built to handle rain and wet roads without difficulty. What causes problems is not the ride, it is the aftermath. Water displaces chain lubricant and carries grit into the drivetrain.

After any wet ride: wipe the bike down, dry the chain, and re-lubricate it. Check the battery mounting point and contacts are dry before refitting. Avoid deep standing water, since riding through a flooded section is a genuinely different proposition from riding in rain.

Coastal and salt air

If you ride near the sea, salt accelerates corrosion on the chain, brake hardware, spokes and electrical connectors, even if you never touch the beach. Rinse with fresh water and dry after coastal rides, lubricate the chain more frequently than the standard interval, and apply a light protective spray to exposed bolts monthly.

Dust and dry trails

Dry, dusty conditions are hard on suspension seals and drivetrains. If you ride a suspension model such as the EMX+ or the front-suspension T-Rex Air on dusty trails, wipe the fork stanchions after every ride. Dust that sits on the seals gets drawn inside and destroys them.

Never pressure wash any e-bike. High-pressure water forces its way past seals and into bearings, the motor housing and electrical connectors. A bucket, a sponge and a hose on low pressure is all you need.

If your bike is single-speed, as the T-Rex Pro is, you have no derailleur to adjust and no gear cable to maintain, which removes a common failure point entirely. Chain care still matters just as much. Arguably more, since a single-speed chain runs on the same two sprockets for its entire life rather than distributing wear.

If your bike is multi-speed, build one habit: ease off the pedals when you shift. Changing gear under full motor assistance is the fastest way to destroy a drivetrain on any e-bike. A momentary pause costs nothing.

Two notes worth expanding.

Mechanical disc brakes, fitted to the T-Rex Pro and T-Rex Air, are simple, field-serviceable and easy to adjust anywhere, which is a genuine advantage over hydraulics. The trade-off is that they need adjusting as the pads wear. If the lever is travelling further to the bar than it used to, turn the barrel adjuster in a quarter-turn at a time until the bite point returns. This takes thirty seconds and no tools.

Tyre pressure is consistently underestimated. A tyre 20% under-inflated costs meaningful range and significantly increases puncture risk. Ninety seconds with a track pump each week is the highest-return maintenance task on this entire list.

The brake cut-off check deserves its weekly slot. Every bike in our range uses auto cut-off e-brakes, meaning the motor disengages the instant you pull a lever. It is a safety system that works invisibly until it doesn't. Test it deliberately: roll forward under low assistance and pull the lever. The motor should cut immediately.

Your maintenance calendar

Before every ride. Brakes, lights, tyres by squeeze, battery level.

Weekly. Tyre pressure with a gauge, brake cut-off test, quick frame and drivetrain look-over, wipe down.

Every 200 km. Clean and lubricate the chain. More often in wet, coastal or dusty conditions.

Monthly. Brake pads and cable tension, spoke tension, bolt check, motor inspection, suspension wipe-down, gear adjustment where applicable.

Every 500 km. Chain wear check, motor mounting bolts, full brake inspection.

Annually. Professional service including bearing check, wheel true and battery health diagnostic.

How to keep your warranty valid

This is where riders lose money without realising it. Common actions that void coverage:

  • Derestricting the bike. Removing the 25 km/h assistance cut-off or fitting a tuning device voids the warranty immediately. It also removes the bike's legal status as a bicycle across the EU. Under EN 15194 and Regulation 168/2013, an e-bike must have a maximum continuous rated power of 250W, assistance that cuts at 25 km/h, and assistance only while pedalling. Exceed any of those and you are riding an unregistered motor vehicle, with the fines, insurance requirements and licensing obligations that follow.

  • Using a non-original charger. Almost universally excluded from coverage.

  • Opening the battery casing. Any attempt to open, repair or rebuild a pack ends coverage instantly. Lithium packs are also genuinely dangerous to open.

  • Pressure washing. Forcing water into sealed bearings and electrical housings is treated as user damage, not a defect.

  • Fitting non-approved parts. Particularly motors, controllers, batteries and displays.

  • Neglecting basic servicing. A drivetrain destroyed by never lubricating the chain is wear, not a warranty claim.

Two things worth doing on day one: register your e-bike so your warranty is active and your bike is on record, and keep your invoices and service notes somewhere you can find them. When a genuine claim does arise, documented history makes the process considerably faster.

Mistakes that cost riders money

Charging immediately after a hot ride. Let the pack cool. Forty-five minutes.

Leaving the bike on charge for days. Unplug when it's full. Overnight is fine, a week is not.

Storing at 100% or 0%. Both accelerate degradation. Fifty to sixty percent for anything over two weeks.

Ignoring a new noise. Clicks, grinding and rattles are diagnostic information. They do not resolve themselves.

Pressure washing. Bucket, sponge, low-pressure hose. Nothing more.

Shifting under full power. Ease off the pedals for half a second.

Riding on a worn chain. A €25 chain replaced on time saves a €150 drivetrain.

Using household or automotive lubricants. Use a proper bicycle chain lubricant: wet formulation for rain, dry for dust.

Never checking tyre pressure. The most common cause of "my range has got worse."

When to see a technician

Handle yourself: cleaning, lubrication, tyre pressure, brake pad replacement, brake cable adjustment, basic gear adjustment, bolt checks.

Take it to a professional:

  • Any motor fault, unusual noise from the motor housing, or loss of assistance

  • Battery faults, unexpected capacity loss, or charging failures

  • Display error codes that persist after a restart

  • Wheel truing and spoke replacement

  • Bearing replacement, including bottom bracket and headset

  • Suspension servicing

  • Any suspected frame damage

An annual professional service is worth the cost even when nothing is obviously wrong. Technicians spot wear patterns that stay invisible until they become failures.

And this is the part worth being direct about. The reason to buy from an established brand rather than an unbranded marketplace import is precisely this moment. A cheaper bike is only cheaper until the controller fails in month fourteen and there is nobody to call, no parts available, and no warranty worth the PDF it was written on.
