Giving Ikigai True Meaning: A Professor’s Journey to Sustainable Living
Dr. Harish Dixit, a retired Food Science and Technology professor from JNKVV Jabalpur, proves that age is no barrier to leading an active life of exploration. At 65, he’s shown enthusiasm at every step as he embarks on a remarkable journey of green living, inspiring others to rethink retirement.
He believes that we do not inherit the planet but borrow it from future generations. After dedicating over four decades to academia, Dr. Dixit has traded his car keys for the handlebars of his trusty Doodle. “This is not just an e-cycle; it’s my partner in sustainability,” he says with pride. His sustainable journey includes fitting his house with solar panels, riding his beloved Doodle, a foldable e-cycle, farming, and growing his love for nature.
Even during his teaching years, he advocated for sustainability, and with the freedom retirement brings; he has now taken his commitment to the environment to a new level by swapping out his rides with a healthier alternative that makes the planet smile, too.
Dr. Dixit has now discovered the joy of cycling. It keeps him active and in shape, resulting in a healthy lifestyle and a more active and loving grandparent. “Every ride contributes to my health and a bonus: a cleaner planet,” he explains. He now uses his e-cycle for most outdoor chores and errands, reducing his reliance on the car.
His daily adventures take him outside of city boundaries to his farm, where he enjoys the peace of nature while knowing he’s making environmentally conscious choices. “Cycling allows me to explore my surroundings while minimising my impact on the environment,” he shares.
Throughout his life, Dr. Harsh Dixit has supported sustainability passionately. He shares his experiences with friends, neighbours, and former colleagues. His story exemplifies how one person can make a difference through simple choices—like cycling over traditional transportation methods.
