The Key Difference Between Electric Cycles And Motorcycles?

Electric bicycles are essentially bicycles with an integrated electric motor. They are designed to assist the rider's pedalling rather than replace it entirely.

E-cycles come in various styles and forms, including city bikes, mountain bikes, folding bikes, and are great options for commuting, recreation, or fitness purposes. They are much less bulky than the average electric motorcycle and have a throttle to accelerate to a certain speed limit depending on the laws and regulations of a country.

Suitability And Usability 

Electric cycles are typically easier to ride and require less skill and experience compared to electric motorcycles. They require the user to pedal away just as they would a traditional cycle, only with the added advantage of electric assistance that can be modulated based on need or convenience.

The controls are simple, and the motor seamlessly kicks in to amplify your pedalling effort. This feature makes it easier to tackle hills, steep incline,s and ride longer distances without excessive physical exertion.

Electric bicycles are also suitable for those who haven’t reached the legal driving age yet and hence do not possess a driving licence. It caters to people from all walks of ages.

Electric motorcycles, while still kind to the environment, have a very limited space of usage given its weight and maintenance charges being a major factor.   

The Cost Factor

Electric cycles are generally much more affordable than electric motorcycles.

Thanks to the lower price tags, they are an accessible option for a much wider audience. They often require less maintenance and have fewer expensive components compared to electric motorbikes, which, apart from the higher upfront costs, are also potentially very expensive to repair and maintain.

Moreover, the cost of riding an electric cycle is as little as Rs 7 per kilometre. It’s that cheap! 

Legal Requirements 

Electric bicycles have fewer regulatory requirements compared to electric motorcycles. E-cycles do not require a driver's licence, registration, or insurance, depending on local laws. This makes it a more accessible option for those who do not possess a driver's licence. Supplementary documents are a hassle that you don't have to bother with when driving an e-cycle.

On the other hand, electric motorcycles need you to possess just as much documentary evidence as any other motorist driving a traditional combustion-powered car.

Maneuverability

Electric bicycle is generally lighter and more manoeuvrable than an electric motorcycle. It is designed to be agile and easy to handle, particularly in crowded urban cities with high traffic congestion.

E-cycles can access bike lanes and paths, offering a more direct and convenient commuting route in many cities, even when there is a bottleneck.

Motorcycles, while manoeuvrable, can’t quite match the agility of an electric cycle that can easily sneak through the tightest of spaces in traffic. 

Speed And Range (Battery Capacity)

An electric cycle generally has lower power output compared to an electric motorcycle. It usually features a motor with power ratings ranging from 250 watts to 750 watts.

The average speed of an e-cycle is around 25-45 km/hr, depending on the rules and regulations of a country. Even though motorcycles with their more powerful motors can attain higher speeds, the battery capacity and the pedal assist levels in e-cycles are now being optimised to offer better distribution and use of the electric power, extending the range.

Furthermore, the most beneficial part of owning an electric cycle is that even after the battery drains completely, it can still be used manually so you are never left stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Another advantage that an electric bicycle has over an electric motorcycle is that most of them are designed to have removable batteries. ⁠Electric cycles and electric motorcycles are both environmentally friendly modes of transport. However, with e-cycles, the emissions are not only zero, the noise pollution is also minimal.

Furthermore, the production of electric motorcycles is more resource-heavy compared to an e-cycle. The battery shelf life might not be at par, but the cost for replacement and maintenance would be much lower in comparison, making it cost-effective in the long run. 

The Fitness Factor

Without a doubt, the electric cycle wins here hands down. You can’t burn calories on an electric motorcycle ever. The throttle and pedal assist system is an option that you can use depending on your goals.
