Common Misconceptions About Electric Cycles (and how we bust them!)

In this blog, we aim to shed light on these misconceptions and provide clarity on the true nature and benefits of electric cycling. Join us as we debunk common myths and set the record straight, empowering readers to make informed decisions about embracing this innovative mode of transportation. Let’s go.

ELECTRIC CYCLES ARE JUST MOTORISED SCOOTERS This is a prevalent misconception. Unlike scooters or motorcycles, electric cycles still require pedalling effort from the rider. The electric motor assists, but it doesn't completely replace human power. These are designed to augment pedalling, making cycling easier and more accessible. E-cycles are specifically designed to help riders lead a more active lifestyle.

THEY ARE TOO FAST While some electric cycles can reach higher speeds, most models are designed to comply with local speed limits. In India and many other countries, these 2 wheelers are legally limited to a maximum assisted speed of 25 km/h. Riders can still pedal faster, but the electric motor assistance cuts off beyond the speed limit.

ELECTRIC CYCLES ARE ONLY FOR THE LAZY This misconception stems from the misunderstanding that e-cycles eliminate the need for physical exertion. In reality, e-cycles encourage people of all fitness levels to engage in cycling. The electric assistance allows riders to conquer challenging terrains, commute longer distances, and enjoy cycling without excessive strain. Thanks to the perceived ease, e-bike riders have been observed to ride more often and further compared to traditional bicycles - meaning e-bike riders get more exercise!

EBIKES DON'T PROVIDE EXERCISE While ebikes offer electric assistance, they still require pedalling effort from the rider. Studies have shown that riders of electric bikes still experience cardiovascular benefits and improved fitness levels compared to sedentary modes of transportation. The level of exercise can be adjusted by choosing different assist levels or pedalling with less reliance on the motor. For example, the EMX by EMotorad provides riders with 5 different pedal assist options offering them unrestricted flexibility.

E-BICYCLES ARE HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO HANDLE Earlier e-bicycle models used to be heavy, but advancements in technology and design have led to lighter and more manoeuvrable options. Many modern e-bicycle makers are now experimenting with lightweight materials, such as aluminium or carbon fibre, and innovative frame designs that balance weight distribution. This makes them easier to handle and navigate, even at slower speeds or when the motor is not engaged.

ELECTRIC CYCLES ARE ONLY FOR OLDER OR UNFIT RIDERS While e-bikes do provide much more accessibility for individuals with physical limitations or reduced fitness levels, they are not limited to a specific age group or fitness level. E-bicycles cater to a wide range of riders, from young commuters to fitness enthusiasts, and offer a versatile option for anyone looking for an efficient and enjoyable cycling experience. For example, the EMotorad Doodle is a compact, but capable little thing, making it perfect for nearly any rider, big or small. Oh, and it folds easily for easy carrying and storage too!

EBIKES REQUIRE A DRIVER'S LICENSE OR REGISTRATION Blatantly untrue! In most countries like India, e-bikes that comply with specific power (<250W) and speed limits (25km/h) are classified as bicycles and do not require a driver's license or registration.

EBIKES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE While some high-end models can be costly, there is a wide range of ebikes available at various price points to suit different budgets. Take EMotorad X1 and X2 for example, they are inexpensive electric runabouts that present a great option for practical everyday mobility. Additionally, when considering the cost of commuting or owning a car, ebikes offer a cost-effective transportation option with lower maintenance and fuel expenses.

By dispelling these misconceptions, we can better understand and appreciate the benefits of electric bikes as a practical, eco-friendly, and enjoyable means of transportation for a wide range of individuals. More power to you, rider! ❤️
