Anatomy of a Great Electric Cycle

As the world embraces itself for sustainable development and more fuel-efficient technology, electric cycles are gearing up and for all the good reasons. It’s the most simplistic solution for all the commute problems major cities have today globally. And though e-cycles have been here for a very long time (since the 18th century to be precise), it’s only now we are seeing its rise in the market. 

Though the anatomy of a cycle and an e-cycle are almost identical, there are a few components that make the latter unique. Wondering what makes an electric cycle, a really great one? What is the anatomy that holds up the test of time? Let’s take a look.  

Frame

Without a doubt, the frame is what makes not just an electric cycle, but any cycle withstand any terrain. The type of material and geometry play a pivotal role in shaping the riding experience. Materials like aluminium and carbon fibre are the most favoured given their lightweight and durable properties. The frame geometry determines the posture and stability, making it paramount when it comes to choosing the right electric cycle. A well-designed frame not only ensures stability but also makes sure you don’t look out of style at any point.

Motor

What’s a world without big hearts, eh? The same goes for an electric cycle. The motor is the heart of it, responsible for converting electrical energy into mechanical power - in simple words - it’s what propels you ahead when you accelerate. The most common motors you’ll find on an e-cycle are either placed on the front or rear hub to directly power the wheel or on the frame to power the chain. The power output of the motor is another crucial factor. The motor wattage ensures the electric cycle meets the specific needs of the rider, the higher it is the longer you go. This makes it easier when you’re going uphill or visiting your favourite restaurant that you haven’t been to in a while because the commute is dreadful. The range usually varies from 250 watts to 750 watts with speed varying between 25 km/h to 45 km/h depending on the country’s laws and regulations, which might not sound a lot, but it is given that the chunk of its structure is still a cycle. Break the speed limits (not literally) without getting a ticket, how cool is that?!    

Battery

A powerful motor needs an equally robust power source, and this is where the battery comes in. The battery’s capacity determines the range of the electric cycle, making it a crucial factor when it comes to long commutes. Lithium-ion batteries are most preferable given their balance between energy density and weight. The placement of the battery too contributes a lot when it comes to weight distribution, ensuring stability and comfort throughout your ride.

Control System 

You got the power source, you got the heart, now it needs a brain. A control system orchestrates efficient power management by regulating the flow of electricity from the battery to the motor, ensuring smooth acceleration and optimal performance. The user interface allows riders to control power levels and monitor vital information. A user-friendly interface enhances the overall experience and makes sure you have complete control over your electric cycle.

Brakes

You're out on a ride…the wind runs through your hair,it’s not tour de France but now it feels like one, suddenly a dog comes across and you pull the brakes as hard as you can but end up in a gutter, now…we don’t want that, do we? Brakes are a crucial factor no matter if it’s an electric bicycle or a car. Disc brakes have become the standard today, offering reliable stopping power even in wet conditions. This not only enhances braking efficiency but also contributes to the overall energy efficiency of the electric cycle, making sure you don’t end up in a ditch. 

Suspension

Depending on the type of use, choose the right type of electric bicycle without compromising safety and comfortability. Each one is built differently, and so does the ability to handle different terrains. For riders venturing beyond smooth city roads, a reliable suspension system becomes indispensable. E-cycles like traditional cycles also come with front and rear shock absorbers for better comfort. The type of suspension chosen depends on the intended use - whether it’s leisurely rides on paved paths or off-road adventures that demand robust shock absorption, a good suspension will always make sure your rides are comfortable throughout the journey.

Terrain

The type of terrain you are planning to ride plays a major role in choosing the right electric cycle. Each cycle is built differently, the anatomy varies depending on the type of terrain it can handle. You can’t go off-roading on an electric bicycle that is meant for commuting, just like how you can’t ride a horse every day to work (fun to think about it though). Each electric bicycle comes with its own set of limitations, knowing what type will suit your needs will help you in the long run. 

Lights

Imagine you’re returning from work and the street lights are out, you pedal slowly and reach home late, what a bummer! Just like any other vehicle, an electric cycle too needs a proper headlight and taillight, this ensures you see everything clearly and don’t hit a snag on your rides after sunset.
