If you’ve been exploring electric cycles or even traditional bicycles, you’ve probably come across this debate: disc brakes vs. pad brakes (also called rim or V-brakes). So, what’s the real difference? And more importantly, which one should you go for?

  • Pad (V-brakes): These are the more traditional type of brake, where rubber pads squeeze against the rim of the wheel to slow it down.

  • Disc Brakes: Here, a metal disc (called a rotor) is attached to the hub of the wheel. The calliper squeezes the disc to stop the bike.

2. Better in All Weather Conditions

Ever tried stopping your cycle during a sudden rain? If you’re using V-brakes, you know the struggle. Wet rims = reduced friction = poor braking.

Disc brakes, on the other hand, perform consistently in rain, mud, or dust. That’s why they’re a popular choice for mountain bikes, trail cycles, and now, high-performance urban e-bikes.

3. No Wear on Wheel Rims

V-brakes work by constantly rubbing against the wheel’s rim, which causes wear and tear over time. With disc brakes, the rotor takes the friction, keeping your wheel rims in better shape for longer.

This means lower maintenance costs in the long run, especially if you ride often or commute daily.

4. More Control with Less Hand Pressure

Because disc brakes use hydraulic or cable systems with better force distribution, you don’t need to squeeze as hard to get results. This is a huge plus for longer rides or riders who value comfort.
