Summer Cycling Essentials for the Best Rides in Hot Weather

Summer Cycling Essentials for the Best Rides in Hot Weather

Summer! The perfect time to take out your bicycles or e-cycles, ditch those pesky mudguards and enjoy the warm summer sunshine on your face. It’s the time to feel that gentle summer breeze and ride off into the sunset like the romantic lead in a Hollywood movie.

However, the real summer riding (besides all the romance in your head) is a bit different - a sweaty, sticky mess if you go unprepared. That's why we've put together this handy guide to help you stay cool, comfortable, and stylish on your bike this summer. 🚴‍♀️

Summer Cycling Dress - Layer Up, But Keep It Light

Layering up might seem like a winter essential - a little counterintuitive for the summer because isn’t it about ditching all layers in the summer? Unfortunately, as opposed to popular belief, layering up is the way to go, no matter the season. It protects you from the cool, chilly early mornings, the scorching afternoon heat, the unpredictable showers, or the dusty summer storms.

The summer layers are about finding clothes that will keep you dry and comfortable throughout your ride. You don’t want the material to stick to your skin or chaf from excessive riding - both very uncomfortable and probably painful.

Pro Tip: Go for materials that absorb sweat faster than you can say ‘hydration break.’ These materials prevent that clammy, sticky feeling and also keep the air circulating so you don’t feel like you’re trapped in a sauna from hell. Going for morning rides in the mountains? Pack a thin, breathable jacket. Expecting a midday heatwave? Stash it away and let the breeze do its thing.

The Essential Items

1. The Star of the Show: Your Summer Cycling Jersey

Summer rides are incomplete without a lightweight, short-sleeve jersey that feels like a second skin. Look for one made from lightweight, breathable materials like mesh or merino wool  – they’re not just for show; they work with the wind to keep you cool, even when the air is still. Merino wool, on the other hand, will absorb moisture and keep you dry. And don't forget about style - a bright colour or fun design can make your ride even more enjoyable. Style is confidence, after all!

If you’re headed to a place where the sun feels like it’s a little too close for comfort, consider a featherweight jersey made from ultra-light fabrics. These are specifically designed for those sweltering, humid days when even thinking about layers makes you sweat.

Don’t forget about those handy rear pockets. They’re perfect for stashing snacks, a phone, or that emergency gel pack. Just make sure to pick a jersey with a zipped pocket to store your valuables. If you’re a mountain biker, you might lean towards a looser fit with no zips or pockets – but don’t worry, these jerseys are still built to handle sweat like a pro.

And here’s a word to the wise: don’t let sunburn ruin your ride. Apply high-SPF sun lotion, especially if your jersey is super lightweight. You might feel the breeze, but those UV rays can sneak right through.

2. Summer Baselayers – Yes, You Need One

Here’s the deal: a summer baselayer isn’t about adding warmth; it’s about keeping you sweat-free and cool, like a personal air conditioner. A lightweight, sleeveless baselayer will help keep you dry and comfortable, even on the hottest days.

While Merino wool is great for cooler mornings, go for a synthetic baselayer like polyester or nylon if the forecast is getting warmer. These are lightweight materials and quick to dry; some even come in mesh for that extra bit of breathability.

However, for the ultimate summer comfort, try a sleeveless baselayer. It removes any form of bulk and keeps things sleek under your jersey, especially if you’re going for a close-fitting or aero style.

3. Shorts That Keep You Moving

Cycling shorts are the unsung heroes that keep your summer rides long. You’ve got two great options to choose from - waist shorts or bib shorts. While both are perfect options, the latter comes with shoulder straps to keep them in place, which can be a lifesaver on longer rides.

What you need to pay special attention to is the material, though! A lightweight, breathable material like lycra or mesh is the ideal choice. Perforated chamois or semi-detached chamois pads will help keep you cool and dry, while a comfortable fit will make your ride even more enjoyable. Keep your style in check as well - something bright and fun to complement your jersey.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a multi-day tour, pack a couple of pairs or make sure to wash them between rides. Trust us, you will be thankful for this extra care. For mountain bikers, go for baggier shorts. They, too, come in lightweight, ventilated options to help beat the heat.

4. Gilet – Your Summer Ride’s Best Friend

A gilet is like a warm hug for your core, keeping you warm, cosy and comfortable, even on those long, chilly journeys. These sleeveless vests perfectly sprinkle a touch of warmth without overheating. They’re also easier to zip up when it starts to blow, shower, or the temperature drops, and just as easy to stash away when the sun shines bright and hot. Like every other piece of clothing, go for lightweight, windproof materials like polyester or nylon. Also, look out for packability - a gilet that can fit in your back pocket is perfect for long rides or changeable weather.

However, if you’re heading to the mountains or are expecting drastic weather changes, a windproof or waterproof gilet is worth the extra bulk. Some even come with pockets, which is a great bonus for those long days on the bike.

5. Jackets for When the Sky Opens Up

Unfortunately, summer doesn't always mean dry roads. It can drizzle at any moment.  That's why a lightweight, waterproof jacket can be a game-changer when the skies turn grey. The key ingredient here to look for is breathability - you don’t want a jacket that keeps you dry on the outside but sweaty and wet on the inside. As such, it’s good to choose performance fabric like Gore-Tex or similar technology, which balances waterproofing with ventilation.

However, if you are only expecting a light shower and some wind, it’s better to pick out a windproof jacket. These are more breathable and easier to pack as opposed to waterproof ones. They are what we like to call the perfect “just in case” wear. For windproof picks look for materials like polyester or nylon.

Cycling Accessories For Added Comfort

Beyond the clothing, adding a few key accessories to your list can make a world of difference on a summer ride. Sometimes, these are more important than the clothes you don. Here are our top accessory essentials for any type of ride-

1. Cycling Cap

A cycling cap is like a secret weapon for those long rides. It keeps the sun out of your eyes and adds a touch of style to your outfit. Some even absorb your head sweat for extra cooling. It’s also the perfect accessory for those unpredictable rainy days, making sure your hair doesn’t get wet and you don’t catch a cold.

Besides looking for one made from lightweight, breathable materials like cotton or mesh, make sure the cap sits comfortably on your head to avoid getting a headache.

Pro tip: Go crazy and opt for a cycling helmet with proper ventilation, and a detachable visor to use as per your need. It keeps you safe and cool.

2. Arm and Knee Warmers

Early starts or late finishes? It’s always a good idea to keep a pair of arm or knee warmers handy. For really hot days, arm warmers protect you from the scorching heat while on cold mornings, it keeps you warm.

3. Mitts

Mitts are like a warm hug for your hands, keeping you comfortable and protected, even on long rides. These fingerless gloves give you the grip you need, especially on sweaty days and prevent sunburn. They also help to prevent calluses and are immensely useful for riders who enjoy regular, long rides.

Pro tip: Just remember to apply sunscreen to those exposed fingertips!

4. Socks

Socks are like the unsung heroes of cycling - they keep your feet comfortable and dry, even on long rides. Always go for thin, synthetic socks with a mesh construction to keep your feet cool. Merino socks are a great choice for their natural antibacterial properties. And remember the moisture-absorption properties - a good pair of socks will keep your feet dry and comfortable, even on sweaty days.

5. Sun Protection

Sun protection is the absolute must for cycling, or for that matter, any outdoor sport. You need to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays and the hot sun that burns quicker than you can imagine. Clothing and external accessories can only help so much. If you are into long, daily cycling, always carry sunscreen with you and apply it every couple of hours. Go for sunscreens that are closer to or are SPF 50 PA++++ to get the maximum protection. It’s an indispensable protection even during winter mornings.

While you are at it, add sunglasses to the list as well. Not just for the ‘looking cool’ factor, it helps protect your eyes from UV rays, dust, and debris. Find a pair with good UV protection and a secure fit.

6. Water Bottles

While you are counting your carry-ons, don’t forget to add water bottles to the list. They are literally the lifeblood of cycling, keeping you hydrated and energised throughout your ride. Pick ones made from lightweight, BPA-free materials like plastic or stainless steel, but don't forget about capacity - a larger water bottle may be necessary for longer rides.

Hydration is key, especially in the summer heat. Consider fitting an extra bottle cage on your bike so you’re never caught out in the middle of nowhere with an empty bottle.

7. Backpack

For those longer rides where you need extra storage to pack away your essentials, a compact, lightweight backpack made with breathable material is the perfect companion. Whether you’re packing extra accessories, some snacks, tools or safety kits, you need the right backpack to support you throughout the ride. Plus, with a good backpack, you can rest assured that your valuables are safe and sound, and you don’t need to carry anything in your hands.

Pro tip: Always, always, opt for lightweight backpacks. You don’t want heavy backpacks to weigh you down, or tire you faster.

Bonus Tips

  • Always check the weather forecast before heading out on a ride.

  • Pack extra snacks and water for long rides.

  • Bring a basic tool kit and spare tube in case of emergencies.

  • Carry some first aid with you for a quick fix if you get into any minor accident.

  • Take a GPS with you and a handy map if you are going off to unknown trails.

  • If you have the budget, opt for an e-cycle to get that extra pedal assist when you are tired.

  • Take breaks and enjoy the scenery - summer cycling is all about having fun!

The Bottom Line: Ride Smart, Ride Cool

Summer cycling is about freedom, fun, and feeling the wind in your face. A good ride is one of comfort and enjoyment, and for that, you need the right gear by your side. A lightweight jersey, some base layers, comfortable shorts, a gilet for chilly mornings, and a jacket for unpredictable weather are all you will need.

Add on a few more essential accessories and a little bit of know-how, and you’ll be prepared for whatever the road – or trail – throws at you. So grab your bike, hit the road, and soak up the sunshine, and don’t forget to enjoy the view!
