Guide to E-cycle Motors and Motorcycle Motor Comparison

There was a time when you had limited options when it came to the mobility sector. It was either 4-wheelers or 2-wheelers, but today we get variations in each segment. Add batteries to that mix and now we have a whole new set of different types of vehicles for every type of rider. Cycles now have electric cycles, cars have electric cars, and even motorcycles have become electric. A very huge market still dwells on the two wheeler segment so we will dive in today and find out what makes electric cycle motors different from motorcycle motors and what factors come in when choosing one.

Motorcycle Motor

It’s not a secret, motorcycles have a huge market. The motors are not just crafted for speed, but also efficiency depending on the needs and preferences of a rider. On top of that, the motors are huge and come in different power capacities. There are two types of motors in the market right now; internal combustion and electric motors. Internal combustion motors burn fuel to generate power. It’s powerful and provides long-range capabilities but also produces emissions and requires regular maintenance. Electric motors are similar to those found in electric cycles but have a higher power output. It offers instant torque and smooth acceleration, making electric motorcycles a popular choice for urban commuting and sport riding.  

Electric Cycle Motor

Smaller, leaner, and a greener alternative. Electric cycles are the most versatile mode of transportation today. It’s perfect for daily commuters, fitness enthusiasts (seasoned and newbies both), grocery runs, and if you want to straight down just have fun. The motor won’t make you overtake a motorcycle, but it sure can help you and your electric cycle manoeuvre through everyday traffic without breaking a sweat. The motors come in different power output capacities too, just like a motor of a motorcycle, but the only difference is the placement. There are two types of electric cycle motor; Hub motors and mid-drive motors. Hub motors are located in the hub of the wheel (either the front or rear) and provide power directly to the wheel. They are easy to install and maintain, making them popular for e-cycles used for commuting and leisure riding.   

Mid-Drive Motors on the other hand are mounted near the electric cycle's bottom bracket to provide power to the drivetrain. This offers better weight distribution and efficiency, making it ideal for off-road and mountain biking.

Power Output

Not a fair comparison factor given the two are poles apart, but both are crafted to provide high performance in their respective segments. Depending on the motor, motorcycles cater to different people. If you want something for daily commute, or something fancy that clocks over 200 kmph like a hot knife through butter, there's a motorcycle with different power capacity for everyone. When it comes to electric cycle motors on the other hand, it too follows the same concept; there’s one for commuting, and there’s also one for the weekend off-roader in you. There’s an electric cycle for every trail and one for all trails. Whether you are just starting to cycle or are a veteran cyclist, it’s downright perfect catering to all types of needs and preferences. Two different motors, but same adrenaline filled experience. 

Cost & Maintenance

Electric cycle motors have less maintenance checks compared to a motorcycle engine. On top of that, the latter needs more frequent and intensive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and engine tune-ups. Electric cycle motors on the other hand are relatively straightforward and often require simple tasks like occasional chain lubrication and minor adjustments to avoid wear and tear in the long term. Electric cycles are not only a sustainable solution but also cost-effective, making it the most versatile option in the mobility segment. To make things easier, there are conversion kits in the market today which converts your conventional cycle into an electric cycle. The motor is easily mounted depending on the type and voila! You now have your own electric cycle. 

Environmental Impact

It’s a no-brainer, electric cycle motors are meant for sustainability unlike motorcycle motors which run on fuel. Factors such as carbon emissions, energy consumption, and overall sustainability are essential to be considered. 

Electric cycle motors are powered by rechargeable batteries and offer significant pros in terms of environmental sustainability, unlike the motorcycle motors that produce zero tailpipe emissions during the use, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and cleaner air, making them a greener transportation option. Furthermore, the energy consumption is lower compared to a motorcycle motor and can be from renewable resources of energy too, making it a complete solution to overcome global warming. With an electric cycle, you are not just changing the way you commute, but also keeping the planet on the forefront. 

Conclusion

Electric cycles and motorcycles are very different vehicles. But the core problem of overcoming the commute challenges in everyday life, and poor AQI in major cities around the world is a wake up call to change the way we do things.
