What is a cycle mirror and how does it work?

A cycle mirror is a small rear-view mirror mounted on your cycle, on the handlebar, bar-end, helmet, glasses, or wrist, that shows you exactly what is happening behind you without requiring you to turn your head.

The principle is identical to a car’s side mirror. You glance at it, assess the situation behind you, and make your move, all while keeping your eyes and attention pointed forward.

Most cycle mirrors use convex glass or acrylic lenses. Convex mirrors curve outward, which gives you a wider field of view than a flat mirror of the same size. The trade-off is a slight distance distortion; things appear further away than they are, which is why convex mirrors are often labelled as “Object in the mirror are closer than they appear.” For cycling purposes, the wider view almost always outweighs this small distortion.

Every lane you change and any left/right turn on a busy road involves a rear check. Without a mirror, you have to shoulder check, which briefly destabilises your steering and shifts your weight. Do it while braking or navigating through traffic and a tight space, and the risk increases exponentially.

Bar-End Mirrors

The field of view is slightly narrower, and installation sometimes requires trimming the handlebar grips to fit the expansion plug.

Helmet and glasses-mounted mirrors

Helmet and glasses-mounted mirrors are smaller than your normal handlebar mirrors; these are angled mirrors that attach to your eyewear or helmet brims. These mirrors move with your head, which makes them excellent for dynamic scanning across multiple angles; the only drawback is that they are tiny and require practice to use confidently.

Helmet and glasses mirrors allow you to turn your head and look almost anywhere, unlike handlebar mirrors that only look directly behind the bike. The portability is a genuine advantage; you can use the same mirror across different bikes without any issue. The downsides: the adhesive or clip can loosen over time, and the small mirror face takes time to get used to reading accurately.

Wrist mirrors

Wrist mirrors are small convex mirrors worn on the wrist like a watch; you can raise your wrist slightly to check what is happening behind you, no head turn required. They are the most portable option and cost almost nothing.

The trade-off is the smallest field of view in mirrors; they require you to deliberately move your wrist to use them properly. For casual riders on quieter roads, they work perfectly, but for city commuting in heavy traffic, a handlebar or bar-end mirror gives you a more stable experience.

How to choose the right cycle mirror

Field of view

A wider field of view means you see more of what's behind you. Convex mirrors give you the widest view but distort distance slightly. For city riding and commuting, a wider view is more valuable than perfect distance accuracy; prioritise field of view.

When looking to purchase mirrors, you should always check whether the mirror vibrates loose or rattles on rough roads, as it can be worse than no mirror at all; it can create distraction without providing any useful information. Look for mirrors with a ball-and-socket joint that can lock firmly to your cycle and a lens made from shatter-resistant glass or polycarbonate. Always check your handlebar diameter before you buy; most handlebar-mounted mirrors fit 22mm bars, the most common size of MTBs and hybrid cycles in India. Bar-end mirrors need to match the inner diameter of your handlebar end. How to Install and adjust a cycle mirror

Handlebar-mounted mirror:

  • Loosen the clamp screw on the mirror bracket.
