I'm talking about tyre pressure. Almost nobody checks it until the tyre is visibly soft, and by then you've probably been riding slower and squishier than you realise for a week, maybe longer.

So let's actually fix that habit. Below: what correct pressure does for you, how to read the numbers stamped on your sidewall, roughly where to sit for road, gravel, mountain, hybrid, fat-tyre and e-cycle setups, and the small, avoidable mistakes that leave people slow, sore, or stuck on the roadside.

Why It Actually Matters

Getting your tyre pressure right transforms the way your e-cycle rides. It affects your speed, comfort, and even how likely you are to get a puncture.

If the pressure is too low, the tyres feel sluggish, create more rolling resistance, and are far more likely to suffer pinch flats when you hit a bump. On the other hand, too much air isn't good either. Overinflated tyres feel harsh, bounce over rough roads instead of gripping them, and pass every bump straight through the bike to your hands and body. The best pressure is a balance, firm enough to roll efficiently and reduce the risk of punctures, yet soft enough to keep good traction and smooth out uneven roads. Get it right, and your e-cycle feels quicker, more comfortable, and far more enjoyable to ride.

Reading PSI and Your Sidewall

PSI, pounds per square inch, is simply the unit everyone uses. Every tyre has a recommended range printed right on the sidewall: a minimum, a maximum, and your ideal number lives somewhere inside that band. Not at either edge.

Start there. That printed range is your baseline. From there you fine-tune based on your weight, the terrain, and the weather, which is exactly what the next section walks through.

Ideal Pressure by Cycle Type

Think of these pressure recommendations as a starting point, not a hard rule. The PSI range printed on your tyre is always the one you should follow.

Road bikes generally run higher tyre pressures, usually around 80 to 100 PSI or even more, because they're built to roll quickly and efficiently on smooth roads. If you're a lighter rider, you'll usually be fine at the lower end of the range. Heavier riders, on the other hand, will often get better support and performance by running pressures closer to the upper limit.

Gravel cycles run noticeably softer, roughly 35 to 50 PSI. You're trading a bit of outright speed for grip and comfort on loose or mixed surfaces, and it's usually worth it.

Mountain bikes go lower again, often 22 to 35 PSI, because grip and cushioning on rough trails matter more than anything else. Go tubeless, and you can often push even lower.

Hybrids sit comfortably in the middle, around 50 to 70 PSI, which balances everyday comfort with reasonable city speed.

Fat tyres run absurdly low by comparison, sometimes just 5 to 20 PSI, so the tyre can float over sand or snow instead of digging in.

What Pushes You Higher or Lower Within That Range

Three things move the needle once you're inside the sidewall's range.

Your body weight is the obvious one. Heavier riders need more air to stop the tyre squashing flat and pinch-flatting on impacts; lighter riders can afford to run softer for extra grip and cushioning. And don't forget to count any cargo, panniers, or a passenger as part of that weight, it adds up fast.

Terrain and weather come next. Loose or rough surfaces reward lower pressure because it gives you grip and cushioning; smooth tarmac rewards higher pressure because it's faster there. In wet conditions, dropping the pressure slightly can actually improve traction.

Then there's tyre width. Wider tyres are happiest at lower pressures, narrower tyres want more air which is precisely why a fat tyre and a skinny road tyre sit at completely opposite ends of the pressure scale.

Checking and Inflating Properly

Use a pump with a built-in gauge, or a separate gauge, don't just squeeze the tyre with your thumb and guess, because that's genuinely unreliable. Check pressure when the tyres are cold, not right after a ride when the air inside has warmed and expanded. Make sure you're matching the right valve type, Presta or Schrader. Then inflate to whatever figure you've settled on, staying inside the sidewall's printed range.

Tyres lose air naturally, even with zero punctures, so get into the habit of checking weekly, or before any ride that matters to you. Two minutes of effort, and it pays you back on every single kilometre afterward.

The Mistakes People Keep Repeating

A few show up constantly. Never check pressure until the tyre already looks flat. Pumping to the absolute maximum because "harder must be faster". It isn't, past a certain point it just rattles your hands and skips over bumps instead of gripping them. Forgetting to factor your own body weight into the equation at all. And ignoring the fact that tyres slowly deflate over time even without a puncture anywhere near them.

One more classic: running road-bike pressures in a mountain or fat tyre, or the reverse. Match the pressure to the tyre and the terrain you're actually riding, check it regularly, and you'll sidestep nearly every pressure-related headache that exists.

Tubed vs Tubeless: A Quick Pressure Note

If you're running tubeless, the rules shift a little. With no inner tube to pinch, tubeless setups can safely go lower than tubed ones, meaning more grip and comfort without the pinch-flat risk that low pressure usually brings on a tubed wheel. Plenty of riders drop several PSI below their old tubed number and genuinely prefer how it feels on rough roads.

Still running tubes? Respect that lower limit on the sidewall. Dropping too far below it is basically how you guarantee a pinch flat on the very next pothole.

How Weather and Heat Mess With Your Numbers

Pressure isn't a fixed thing, it drifts with temperature. Air expands as it heats up, so a tyre pumped up on a cool morning will read noticeably higher by mid-afternoon, while one inflated inside a warm garage can feel a touch low once it's cooled down outside.

On a long, hot ride, especially over dark tarmac soaking up sun, pressure climbs on its own, which is a decent reason not to start right at the maximum in the first place. The practical fix: check when tyres are cold, aim for the middle of your range rather than its ceiling, and don't stress over small day-to-day swings. That's completely normal.

A Word for Heavier Loads and E-Cycles

Carrying a passenger, panniers, or a week's worth of groceries changes the maths. Extra load squashes the tyre further, so nudge the pressure up toward the firmer end of your range to dodge pinch flats and that sluggish, wallowing feeling under load.

The same logic carries over to e-cycles, which are simply heavier machines before you've added anything at all so they typically sit a bit firmer than an equivalent regular bike. Add serious weight, add a little pressure to match. Take it back out once you're riding light again.
